Distant 60 km south from Cariati: Crotone was established province in 1992;it’s an important agricultural, commercial and industrial center of Calabria; Interesting to see is Crotone’s Cathedral, dedicated to the assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Dionysius Areopagite, it goes back originaly to the XI century ; in the halls are vaulted "lamia" of the Toledo’s bastion , a bastion built in the sixteenth century, that houses the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crotone. It’s a permanent exhibition of 107 works of city property , among which are counted sculptures in pottery and bronze, paintings in oil on canvas or wood, watercoloured lithographs and paintings by contemporary artist . The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 4.pm to 8.pm. In the highiest part of crotone is the castle of Charles V, which current structure dates mostly to the reconstruction ordered in 1541 by the Spanish Vice king Pedro of Toledo. The original structure, raised in the ninth century over the ruins of the acropolis, was greatly transformed during the time. About a kilometer from Crotone stands the sanctuary of Hera Lacinia, the most important place of worship of the ancient Greek polis. The temple, which reached its zenith in the fifth century BC The sacred area of Capo colonna long served as an important spiritual and religious center of Magna Grecia , as evidenced by the numerous votive offerings found in the building "B" during the excavations conducted in the years 1987-90. They are objects of different origin: a geometric horse, a bronze model of a nuragica boat (VIII-VII century BC), a sitting sphinx , a mermaid and a bronze winged gorgon, terracotta statuettes’, decorated pottery, silver jewelry such as a ring with a beetle, and various bronze tools; of an exceptional value is a gold crown decorated with myrtle leaves and vines, dated between the middle of the sixth and the beginning of the fourth century BC, which probably encircled the head of a wooden image of a goddess. The important findings are called " the Treasure of Hera."
